The Biggest Vermont Reggae Festival August 4 1990
North Beach 1990 (The Big One)
“ The fifth Vermont Reggae Festival was by far the most attended and exciting festival of
all previous Vermont Reggae Festivals. It was also the most exhausting, nail-biting, and
lesson-learning festival in the eyes of the committee. It was the defining event for the
status and continuation of the festival and was majorly instrumental in underlining the
establishment and popularity of Reggae music throughout all of Vermont and New
England.”
Excerpt from the book “The Vermont ReggaeFestival The Power Of Music: The First Five Years In Burlington.
An estimated crowd of nearly forty thousand on one of the hottest and most beautiful
summer days of the year 1990.
The date of the festival also happened to be the birthday of founder and director Bobby
Hackney. After five years as it’s founder and director, Bobby retired from the committee
to pursue further his musical career. Leaving the festival in the hands of the devoted
committee officers with continued support for moving the festival forward in the years
to come.
One Of the Most Anticipated
Events in Summer of 1990.
Record Breaking Crowd
By 1990 the popularity of the Vermont
Reggae Festival equaled that of just
about any other well known festival in
the United States and parts of the world.
Calls and hotel reservations were
coming in as early as September for the
festival next year. There was no doubt
1990 would be the biggest crowd, and
once again, it was.
Burlington’s Love Of Reggae.
Reggae’s love for Burlington
It would be an understatement to say
what Reggae means to the local
Burlington community. Local artists and
those who came to live in Burlington
from Jamaica help to pioneer the sound
and live stage performance prescence to
the Burlington local community
Peace, Love, And Music
Steller US based muscians from New
York, Boston, Montreal, Los Angeles,
Chicago, Texas, and parts known and
unknown came to Vermont (some for the
very first time) to play and experience
the Vermont Reggae Festival.
Record Breaking Crowd
Regardless Of Who The
Headline Act Was.
The size of the expected crowd
concerned the Mayor and city officials to
the point of where it was suggested to
the committee to not announce the
headline act in advance when
announcing the date. The act scheduled
was Ziggy Marley and The Melody
Makkers. When their tour plans changed
effecting the date, the headine act
became Steel Pulse (above picture), who
had just won a grammy award. Even
though as promised, the committee kept
it a secret. 40 thousand still showed up.
